The Carlin Chronicles Fishing Picture Competition is Back Video included

Updated:

It’s baack! If there’s one thing great about summer, it’s fishing. If there is one thing great about fishing, it’s pictures of the catch. Sometimes it’s little Jimmy or Mary holding a sunfish in one hand with a Mickey Mouse pole in the other. Or maybe it’s an adventurous sportsman standing next to a blue marlin on the dock. The smile and the pride in the accomplishment is the same no matter the age, , and that’s w... More>>

They Don’t Take Credit Cards on the George Washington Bridge

Updated:

Be thankful you live in the highway toll free society that is Southwest Virginia. But if you venture beyond, beware...They don’t take credit cards for the toll on the George Washington Bridge in New York City. This I learned the hard way. We are living in an increasingly cash less society. Stand in line for coffee and you will grumble at the person in front of you who pays with cash and slows down the process. A simp... More>>

The Shot I Missed -- Fighting Deer

Updated:

From 100 yards away I knew I had missed the shot of a lifetime. We were in the Great Meadow at the Shenandoah National Park. It was just after sunrise in early June, and the goal was to photograph newly born fawns in the early morning light. The ultimate goal is to capture that one memorable moment that can’t be defined or anticipated until the second it happens. You hope that you are looking through the lens when i... More>>

How about some love for the tour

Updated:

While we are all loving on the world cup how about a little attention for the Tour de France? The World Cup soccer has captured my interest along with the rest of the nation, and soccer is finally getting the due for which fans have been pining.Which brings me to the Tour de France in the post Lance Armstrong era. When Lance was “winning” his seven Tours, Americans found cycling as they never had before. More>>

Why California Chrome's Symbol is a Donkey

Updated:

Click here to read about California Chrome’s ties to Roanoke and the Virginia Call 811 Center aka Miss Utility. Sitting on my desk is a baseball cap sporting the Call 811 logo on the front and on one side, the words, “California Chrome.” On the other side is an embroidered image of a buck-toothed donkey. It is, for all intents and purposes, California Chrome’s logo. Somehow it doesn’t seem right that this magnificen... More>>

Lynchburg Derailment Environmental Impact

Updated:

It is too early to tell whether there will be lasting effects from the crude oil that spilled in the James River as a result of Wednesday's train derailment in downtown Lynchburg. Environmentalists and investigators alike say it is too soon to assess whether the fact that the river is high and muddy from recent rains is a plus because it may have dispersed the crude oil.To quote one observer on scene today, "We don't know ifdilution is the solution to pollution."WSLS reporter John Carlin was ... Barefoot Runner Makes you Wonder

The scenic, twisting single track trails at Carvin's Cove. It is here that Chris Neikirk often trains for local 5k's. Thanks to Allstate and the United Way

Updated:

Just a quick note about a touching moment that happened today.Allstate invited me to come speak about Saint Francis Service Dogs as part of their United Way kick off. The idea, of course, is to show the good that non-profits do in the community so people will understand the value of giving.I asked my friend, Leigh Brill to bering her service dog, Pato and share some of her personal triumphs. She said she was nervous speaking after me because I am a professional speaker. Please.I gave a little... More>>

Using Facebook to Choose New Glasses

John and his new glasses John and his new glasses
Updated:

I felt like I had beaten the system. A little more than ten years ago, people started telling me I would need eye glasses, “any time now.” The years came and went, but my vision was just fine. Well, that time arrived. I hated to admit it, but I was relying more and more on my drug store readers. And those billboards along the highway just weren’t as sharp as they once were. So long to the 20-10 vision I once bragged... More>>

Saint Francis Service Dogs Graduation Not a Dry Eye Anywhere.

Updated:

Every year I say, “I’m not going to cry.” And every year I do. That’s the nature of the graduation ceremony for Saint Francis Service Dogs. Graduation is when all the people who have been matched with a Saint Francis Service dog in the given calendar year, come together to celebrate the dog’s graduation from trainee to full-fledged service dog. It is an incredibly happy time – where nearly everybody cries. We cry bec... More>>

Photography for the Birds

Updated:

Some photographers have the ability to frame a shot with a piece of sandbar, a bit of sky and some water and it looks like something you would hang on your wall. I’m not one of those photographers. So I take pictures of birds. Actually, I would take pictures of any wildlife, but there are more birds than other animals. I’d love to be a photographer of, say, bears, but that would lead to a lot of frustrating Saturday ... More>>

Are you snow macho?

Updated:

Management here at WSLS-10 graciously reserved hotel rooms for staff members who might not be able to get home during the recent snowstorm. Since this turned out to be the third highest snow accumulation since the National Weather Service started keeping records, that turned out to be a lot of people.

But not me. I'm snow macho.

Anchor Games and Sequins

Updated:

Sequins are not my thing. I wanted to get that off my chest right away. Yet tonight at six and/or eleven p.m. depending upon your viewing habits, you will see me wearing a sequin tie on top of a sequin shirt with a red coat reminiscent of the circus ring master. All of this you will see, as I attempt to figure skate with my 11 p.m. co-anchor Lindsey Ward as part of what we are calling the Anchor Games. The figure ska... More>>

A Lab Puppy Named Chowder

Updated:

We’ve had a great couple of weeks at the Carlin residence – known for years in this blog as Cul de sac Corner. (Of course there are no corners in a cul de sac. It is my own metaphorical little corner of suburbia, and is in fact on a cul de sac.) Digression aside, it has been great, thanks to the lab-mix puppy we have been fostering via the Roanoke Valley SPCA. The first mistake I made was naming him, Chowder. I’m not... More>>
