Rockbridge County principal apologizes after some parents offended by survey

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, Va. – The principal at Natural Bridge Elementary School is apologizing for an anonymous survey she sent home with young students without their parent's knowledge.

The survey asked children if either of their parents are in jail, who do they live with and if they ever attend church.

The questions upset some parents.

School Superintendent Philip Thompson said that Stevens was trying to see if the children had any needs that the school could help meet.

He said the principal is a veteran educator who cares deeply about her students.

Thompson said her heart was in the right place, but he admits things could have been handled better.

Stevens sent a letter of apology to parents.
