AMHERST (WSLS 10) - Firefighters are working to contain a brush fire in Amherst County. Authorities said at approximately 6:30 PM on Saturday Amherst County 911 Center received a call for smoke in the area of Thrasher Creek Road.

Pedlar Volunteer Fire Department, Amherst County Public Safety and the Virginia Department of Forestry responded to the scene. The fire was located on Big Mt. Pleaseant in a remote area of the US Forest Service property said officials. As of 8:30 Saturday night, officials said nearly 25 acres had burned.

Authorities warn residents in the area and people traveling on Route 60 (Lexington Turnpike) will be seeing a great deal of smoke due to the fire and windy conditions. Resources from the US Forest Service and the VA Department of Forestry will remain on scene throughout the night with firefighters and a bulldozer to continue to put a line around the fire and monitor throughout the night.

A cause of the fire has not been determined and the fire is not under control.
