Multiple crashes causing massive delays on Interstate 81 in Montgomery County

MONTGOMERY COUNTY (WSLS 10) – All northbound lanes of Interstate 81 were shut down after multiple crashes on Thursday afternoon.

Virginia State Police were working at least 11 crashes on both the north and south bound sides of Interstate 81 near Radford.

At 3:45 p.m., state police started receiving calls of multiple crashes northbound.  Shortly after these crashes occurred, we started receiving calls for multiple crashes southbound as well

As of 10:08 p.m., the Virginia Department of Transportation is reporting that all lanes are open at mile marker 109, but traffic backups are still about 6 miles in the northbound direction.

Another accident temporarily closed all but the southbound right lane at mile marker 112.

At mile marker 114, all southbound lanes are open again following a tractor-trailer crash. As of 10:07 p.m. VDOT is reporting backups of about 2 miles.

At mile marker 115, all southbound lanes are now open again after being closed temporarily Thursday night.
