New Wytheville shelter opens to help women with children

WYTHEVILLE (WSLS 10) - A new shelter opened its doors in Wytheville to help families in a way no one else in the area is helping.

The Wythe Refuge and Mercy House is accepting both women and children who need help getting on their feet. Other than this new home, surrounding shelters only allow the women to come with children if the family is in a physically abusive situation. The only options for any other type of emergency were in Bristol or Roanoke, until now.

"I just want to see women take control of their lives and their families," said Wythe Refuge and Mercy House president Sharon Gallimore. "I want them to be able to support themselves and not depend on anybody else like government, men, whatever."

Gallimore and her husband spent $20,000 out of their own pocket to open the shelter. They are now seeking donations to help sustain the project.

The house provides food and clothing for the families.
