Altavista man charged with murder after fire dies in custody

Wooding faced two counts of second-degree murder

ALTAVISTA, Va. - An Altavista man charged with two counts of murder after a trailer fire in December died in the hospital Thursday after being found hanging in his cell, according to the Campbell County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office.

Martelle Dashay Wooding, 31, was being held at the Amherst County Adult Detention Center and was found hanging and unresponsive Saturday morning.

Wooding faced two counts of second-degree murder in connection with the fire. 

Police say the three people were killed on Dec. 8, 2016, after a trailer caught fire in the 5000 block of Marysville Road, Gladys.

The victims were 48-year-old Melynda Ann Callaham, 28-year-old Francheska Danielle Lane and 7-year-old Kadriana Lane, all three of whom died in the fire.
