Lynchburg Fire Department training for water rescue missions

Department is conducting a 2 day training in Clemmons Lake

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Lynchburg Fire Department is conducting a two-day water rescue training in Clemmons Lake. The state-funded training brings in different instructors across southwest Virginia to help refresh the firefighters' memory or give new training to some. Trainees say they're learning a number of basic training skills in standing water that could help in moving or swift water missions.

"For firefighters themselves. We're four times more likely to die in a water rescue incident than we are in a house fire, because we don't train as much as we should with water rescue. When there's a water rescue the Fire Department shows up. So we wanna make sure that our firefighters are prepared for the water rescue incidents," said Cpt. Allen Carwile

The department will continue the training Wednesday morning.
