Longtime Eagle Rock firefighter laid to rest

Roger Johns served his community for 43 years

BUCHANAN, Va. – The Roanoke Valley is coming together to say goodbye to a firefighter who was killed last Friday while working on the job. Roger Johns was a member of the Eagle Rock Volunteer Fire Department who many said will be truly missed.

A gymnasium full of his peers said Roger Johns won't be forgotten anytime soon. The way he lived his life is leaving a lasting impact on others.

"If this world were filled with Roger Johns this world would be a better place," said Skylar Linthicum, family friend.

His full firefighter uniform was on display and his coffin was draped with the American flag. Those closest to him said he put his country and his community before himself.

"His priorities were always placed first for the needs of others. His strength help others by his presence. He knew the names and faces of all those around him," said Chaplain Ray Sloan.

The 63-year-old served in the Marine Corps for eight years and served his community for 43 years. Even until he died he was helping others in harm's way as part of the Eagle Rock Volunteer Firefighter Department.

"Always helping others, little concerned about his own safety, and never expecting repayment," said Rev. Brian Clingenpeel.

And his presence will be missed in more ways than one.

"His mischievous twinkle in his eyes. He was also a loving husband, father, son, brother, grandfather, uncle and a true friend," said Sloan.

He was lifted up into the truck for one last time, carrying him to his final resting place at Eagle Rock Baptist Church cemetery.
