Police: Man dies after being shot on Roanoke County road

Crash happened Tuesday afternoon

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. – One man is dead after being shot in Roanoke County on Tuesday afternoon.

The Emergency Communication Center received a call at 3:16 p.m. about a two-vehicle crash with injuries on Newport Road, just off of Catawba Valley Drive.

Crews at the scene found 40-year-old Johnathan Dewayne Hutchinson, from New Castle, unresponsive and discovered while treating him that he'd been shot.

He was taken to Carilion RMH where he was pronounced dead.

Police say Hutchinson began chasing the occupants of another vehicle in Craig County, then followed it into Roanoke County.

As the first car turned right onto Newport Road, Hutchinson attempted the turn, but crashed.

He got out of his car and began another altercation with those in the first vehicle when he was shot, according to police.

No one else was injured and police say after speaking to everyone involved, no arrests have been made at this time.

The incident remains under investigation.
