Dan River reaches major flood stage in South Boston

As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, the river was 29.96 feet

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. – The Dan River in South Boston is currently in major flood stage.

As of 5 p.m. on Wednesday, the river was at 29.96 feet, according to the National Weather Service.

The record height for the river is 33.4 feet.

The National Weather Service doesn't expect the river to leave flood levels until early Saturday morning.

Due to the flooding, many roads in the area are underwater.

Drivers will continue to deal with road closures and traffic pattern changes in South Boston during the next few days as portions of U.S. 501 and U.S. 58 are flooded

Virginia Department of Transportation crews will assist motorists through the detour using (from the direction of Danville) routes 58, 708, 658, 501, 744, 743, 742 and back to Route 58. The detour will remain in place until the water recedes and the road is deemed safe for travel.

A number of secondary roads also remain closed in Halifax and Pittsylvania counties.
