Here's a look at some of the stories we'll be following today

Appalachian Power will conduct a capacity test of its electricity generating units today at Leesville Dam.  Water flows will increase starting at 3 p.m. and lasting for eight hours.  Water levels on the Roanoke River downstream will rise up to eight feet, but are not expected to create hazardous conditions.  The test is required each year by PJM Interconnection, the regional transmission organization that coordinates the movement of electricity in the region.  Warning sirens will sounds before each period of power generation.

A new hotel opens in Roanoke.  A ribbon cutting for the Home2 Suites by Hilton takes place this afternoon.  It's located on Valley View Boulevard, across from the mall.  The hotel features 121 studio and one-bedroom suites.

More than 100 children in Martinsville and Henry County will take part in National Summer Learning Day.  The day aims to keep kids' minds active and stop summer learning loss, which can causes some students to lose two months of skills.  Several locations are taking part including the Blue Ridge Regional Librar, Boys and Girls Club and the Virginia Museum of Natural History.

A new business comes to Franklin County.  Grand Opening festivities take place at the Sheetz on Virgil Goode Highway in Rocky Mount.  Prizes will be given away starting at 10:15 a.m. with the ribbon cutting taking place at 10:45 a.m.  The company will make a donation to Special Olympics Virginia.  The new store opens at 11 a.m.

The Roanoke County School Board will receive a presentation today about changes to the school district's new mission and vision statements.  The were drafted after review by several committees and administrators.  The new mission statement says "Roanoke County Schools provides a safe, nurturing and engaging environment in which students are empowered by knowledge, skills and experiences to thrive as tomorrow's leaders, workforce and citizens."

The highest sellers of cookies within the Girl Scouts of Virginia Skyline will be CEO for the Day.  The seven girls, one from each troop age-level, will spend the day with the council's CEO.  They will have their own offices and computers and will get a limo ride to the Hotel Roanoke for a business luncheon with local business women.
