Higher gas prices and other factors will keep more Virginians off the roads this July Fourth holiday, AAA Mid-Atlantic said.
While more than one million Virginians will travel 50 miles or more from home, the number will be about three percent less than last year’s Independence Day holiday.
“Fewer Virginians will be traveling this July 4th holiday due to soaring gas prices, higher airfares coupled with fewer flights and seats, and general concerns about the economy,” said Windy VanCuren, a AAA Mid-Atlantic spokeswoman.
“Just over half of all holiday travelers plan to stay within 250 miles of their home over the upcoming holiday, most likely as a result of high gas prices and other costs of travel,” VanCuren said. “Only 31% percent plan to travel 1,000 miles or more from home.”
The state average price for a gallon of regular gas was $3.98 today, the automotive group said.
