Prepare to see gas prices start to creep back upward.

AAA Mid-Atlantic says the average cost of a gallon of regular unleaded rose a penny overnight to $3.48 in the Roanoke region.

Our region was the only one in AAA’s survey area that saw a price increase overnight.

AAA’s Windy VanCuren says gas prices in Roanoke had been dropping for five straight days before today.  She adds there are random days where prices have gone up a penny, then back down the next day.

Virginia’s overall average dipped one cent to $3.50.  The Norfolk region’s average dropped two cents to $3.41.  Both the Charlottesville ($3.56) and Richmond ($3.46) regions did not change.

VanCuren says Virginia’s overall gas price average has steadily gone down over the past 42 days.

The national average also held steady at $3.67.

A potential factor tied to gas prices is Tropical Storm Gustav.  The National Hurricane Center predicts it could hit the Gulf Coast as a Category three hurricane by early next week.  Along the Texas, Lousiana, and Mississippi coasts are oil drilling rigs, natural gas drilling rigs, major receiving ports for oil, and refineries that produce gas.
