Gas prices are making smaller SUV’s more popular but are the smaller rides safer?
“The Safety of small SUV’s has improved. Not only are they getting better crash test ratings then just a few years ago, but they are also coming with safety equipment that used to be available only on luxury models,“ said Adrian Lund with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Test video, provided by the institute shows it’s recent crash test results which shows safety has not only improved, but four out of eight vehicles tested got the institute’s “top safety picks.“
Here are the vehicles that did well:
The 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander.
The 2008 Nissan Rouge.
For 2009 models, the Ford Escape and Volkswagen Tiguan. In all four SUV’s, side airbags are standard.
The insurance institutes tests looked at the type of crashes you’re most likely to be involved in. “Top safety picks are our gold medal winners. They provide good protection in frontal crashes, side impacts and rear crashes—the three most common kinds of crashes,“ Lund said.
The vehicle that didn’t do well, the Jeep Wrangler two door. It was tested without the optional side airbags and received a “poor” rating in side crash tests. It got a good rating on front crash tests and a marginal rating on rear protection.
If getting a vehicle with optional side airbags, the institute suggests making sure you get them. For more on other vehicles in the test, go to http://www.iihs.org
