Altria Group is moving its headquarters from New York to Virginia.
The Fortune 500 company is coming to Richmond to join its subsidiary, Philip Morris USA, the nation’s largest cigarette maker.
Company officials have said only a small number of Altria workers made the move from New York. As of January 1st, Philip Morris USA had 5,630 full-time equivalent employees in the Richmond area.
The move comes after Altria spun off its international cigarette division, Philip Morris International. Both Philip Morris companies produce Marlboros.
PMUSA also makes Virginia Slims, Parliament and Basic cigarettes while PMI makes the L&M, Bond Street and other brands.
Altria also owns cigar company John Middleton and a stake in Britain-based beer maker SABMiller PLC.
