The search for an escaped prisoner suspected in the slayings of a hospital security guard Sunday and a Montgomery County sheriff’s deputy this morning is focusing on the Blacksburg area.
Early Sunday morning: Blacksburg police said William Charles Morva, 24, was transported from the Montgomery County Jail in handcuffs and leg irons for treatment of a sprained wrist and leg. Morva was awaiting trial on charges of attempted armed robbery.
Sunday, 2:30 a.m.: Police said Morva wrestled a gun away from a sheriff’s deputy while awaiting treatment at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He then allegedly wounded the deputy and killed Derrick McFarland, an unarmed hospital security guard, before fleeing the hospital on foot.
Monday, 7 a.m.: Blacksburg sheriff’s deputy Eric Sutphin was shot dead. The deputy apparently encountered Morva in the area near Huckleberry Trail and Tech Center Drive, according to Montgomery Sheriff Tommy Whitt.
Monday, 10:30 a.m.: The search for Morva is extended to the campus of Virginia Tech, where classes were canceled and students were told to stay in their residences. Morva remains at large and was believed to be wearing a tie-dye shirt and khaki shorts and was barefoot.
Monday, 3:40 p.m.: Morva’s arrest is announced.
