Here’s a look at what’s going on around town this weekend August 7-10th:

MICROFESTIVUS

If you’re a fan of beer, it’s the perfect yearly event this Saturday in Elmwood Park.

Microfestivus will feature more than 50 different types of beer.

12:00-6:00 p.m.

21 or older to attend.


OLD FIDDLER’S CONVENTION

The Old Fiddler’s Convention continues this weekend.  Enjoy the competition in Galax through Saturday.  The winners will be announced on Sunday.

ROANOKE COUNTY SUMMER BLAST

For some good ole family fun, back up the minivan and head to Green Hill Park in Roanoke County, for Food Lion’s Summer Blast.

There will be clowns, pony rides, face painting, games, and more.

It’s Saturday from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.


CLAYTOR LAKE POKER RUN

Saturday, August 9, 2008 the Rock House Marina will host the First Annual Claytor Lake Poker Run.

Registration will begin at 1:30 p.m., and launch is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.

Those wishing to participate can also pre-register and receive a $5 discount. The first 50 boats to pre-register will receive a free t-shirt.

The event will be opened to all types of boats and personal watercraft. 

Participants will start the poker run at the Rock House Marina, and proceed to three other locations on Claytor Lake to be announced the day of the event.  The fifth and final stop will be back at the Rock House Marina, where participants will enjoy music and a cookout. Various prizes will be awarded during the evening’s festivities. 

The cost to participate is $30 per boat ($25 if Pre-Registered). Proceeds from the event will benefit Friends of Claytor Lake (FOCL).

ART MUSEUM BOOK FAIR

Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.

The Taubman Museum of Art will partner with Barnes & Noble Booksellers to host an exciting day of activities and a Bookfair at the Tanglewood Mall store to support the museum’s education programs.  Ac­tivities are free and include special musical performances, lectures, poetry readings, a poetry slam, artist demonstrations, face painting, caricature drawings, crafts, and much more! 

Barnes & Noble stores nationwide will donate a percentage of every sale made August 9-15 with a special Bookfair code to the museum.  Using the code 319640, anyone in our community and across the country can support the museum through their purchases at Barnes & Noble on August 9-15.  The Bookfair on August 9 also will provide an opportunity for the community to support the museum by purchasing books for the museum from an in-store wish list.

Robert Schultz, award-winning novelist, poet and essayist, will read poetry at 3 pm followed by author and Roanoke College professor Katherine De Lorraine at 4 pm.  National Flatpicking Champion and renowned guitarist Scott Fore will perform with musical guests at 5 pm and 7 pm.

Taubman Museum of Art educators will lecture on subjects including artistic slight of hand, do­mesticity in art, physical reflections of evil in art, the Impressionist influences in Japanese prints, and will provide a how-to on reading Japanese prints, and a sneak peek at the museum’s upcom­ing exhibitions.

Funds from the Bookfair will help to support the museum’s education and outreach programs in­cluding the Artful Writing creative writing program for teens and adults.


DOUTHAT STATE PARK SATURDAY EVENING SHOWCASE

Southbound will be performing at Douthat State Park Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Every Saturday evening during the summer special talent from the region is showcased.  This week’s special guest will be performing country, oldies and more on the shores of Douthat’s lake at the amphitheater. 
On Sunday, Aug. 10, join the Rev. Charlie Johnson from Iron Gate United Methodist Church for a nondenominational worship service at the beach amphitheater starting at 8 a.m.

OCEANS IN MOTION

The Virginia Aquarium’s traveling aquarium truck comes to Roanoke Public Libraries.

See bay and ocean fishes in four separate saltwater aquariums. Feel the spines of a sea urchin, touch the slimy foot of a sea snail, see the home of a hermit crab, and observe the tiny tube feet of the sea star while learning fun facts about each invertebrate.
