Q:  I have slightly elevated triglycerides and glucose and high blood pressure.  Are all of these related and is there a way to reduce them without medication?
Thanks!
Jennifer

A:  They are all three related in that all of them can all be linked to weight. I talked with Dr. Marta Sayers with Cardiology of Southwest Virginia who tells me a person doesn’t have to be obese to have elevated triglycerides, glucose and high blood pressure.

She says, “It’s not like you have to be three hundred pounds.  If you are ten or fifteen pounds overweight, just that much can make a difference.  You don’t have to be grossly obese.”

Dr. Sayers says if a person exercises and eats a healthy diet that weight reduction can lead help reduce those elevated levels and may eliminate the need for medication.  She suggests reducing or eliminating complex carbohydrates from your diet.

You may want to check in with your doctor about 6 months after making the above lifestyle changes.
