New recommendations about ADHD medicine and sudden death in children may leave many of you with questions.

WSLS talks with a local Pediatric Cardiologist about any concerns you might have.

First, the American Heart Association now says before taking any ADHD medications, kids should be given an EKG heart test.

If your child is already taking the medicine, check with your pediatrician about getting the test if he or she hasn’t already had one.

I talked to Carilion Clinic Physician Dr. Joelle Miller about what they will be looking for and she says, “They are looking for short circuits of the electrical wiring of the heart or they’re looking for abnormalities in the re-charging of the electrical system on the heart.“

The reason it is so critical to have this information is because according to the A.H.A., ADHD medications may lead to sudden death in children with heart disease.
