Sheriff Jimmy Ayers is recovering from heart surgery he had on Friday, October 10th.
Ayers’ family released a statement Friday saying he has undergone cardiac bypass surgery and is recovering. The 45-year-old was transported Wednesday to Lynchburg General Hospital complaining about chest pains, said Gary Roakes, the county’s director of public safety.
While he is recovering at the hospital, his family asks that there be no visitors or phone calls but said messages can be left at the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office.
Ayers has been the county’s sheriff since 1996. The Amherst native joined the sheriff’s office in 1985, working his way up to field operations sergeant before running for sheriff.
