Q: When in Spring of 2007 did “pollen season” start? When is “pollen season” expected to start in Spring of 2008? I am planning to travel out of the area during this time, so I would like to know these dates. I hope to miss out on the pollen this year.

A: 10 On Your Side Health Team keeps track of allergy seasons because we know it affects so many people. I was looking through some of our archives for your first question and here is what I have found.
According to Asthma and Allergy Center physician, Dr. Luis Matos, “The pollen season begins in March and lasts until the end of May.”
That is the standard time we see pollen season. You asked about 2007 and 2008. I think it is safe to assume that the season usually starts around the same time. But, the temperature and rain we get plays a big role in this too. We have found that typically dryer conditions lead to higher pollen counts.
There have been years when I’ve talked to doctors who say “It started a little early this year.”
I can understand why you might want to be “out of town” for allergy season.
I talked with Carilion Pharmacist, James Black the other day about allergy medicines and he described our area as an “allergy bowl,” that is especially true for the Roanoke Valley.
If you can’t travel out of town for allergy season then below are some tips from Dr. Matos:
*Keep your windows closed to keep pollen out of your home
*Brushing your hair after being out in heavy pollen can cause allergies to act up because it spreads the pollen around your face and home
*Shower before bed to keep pollen from getting on your sheets and making your symptoms worse
