While sweating excessively isn’t the most attractive part of being an elite athlete, it could prevent exercise-induced asthma.

That’s the result of a study done by researchers at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego.

Doctors studied more than 50 athletes suspected of having the condition, and found sweating rates were significantly higher among those who didn’t react to a substance that triggers asthma symptoms.

Researchers suspect the mechanism that determines sweat volume, also is involved in the amount of water secreted by the airways.  So people who sweat less have drier airways, which increases the risk for asthma.

However, researchers say more research is needed.

Exercise-induced asthma is more common among elite athletes, but it does occur in recreational athletes.
