Federal inspection turns up problems at Martinsburg, West Virginia VA hospital

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. (AP) - Mold found in two units tops the list of concerns uncovered at the Martinsburg Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
A report by the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General released yesterday also found problems with the medical center’s radiology department. And, an unnamed former chief of surgery postponed an operation for one hour so he could finish lunch.
Inspectors say mold was found in two units of the hospital, but that the medical center has since removed the mold and taken steps to make sure it doesn’t return.
They also said problems with inaccurate readings of some radiology surveys have been corrected by appointing a quality control monitor.
The medical center referred requests for comment to the VA in Washington, which did not immediately respond to telephone calls today.
The medical center serves a veteran population of about 129,000 in West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania.
