Gov. Timothy M. Kaine said today it is an embarrassment that some people needed to stand in line for basic health care in the United States.
Kaine spoke as he toured the fairgrounds in Wise County where a three-day expedition by Remote Area Medical was set to treat more than 3,000 people through Sunday.
He added that he felt ashamed that “Virginia taxpayers buy my medical insurance” while others go uninsured.
The RAM mission treats people that do not have access to medical care. They hold expeditions in the U.S. and overseas.
About 2,500 people lined up for care before dawn this morning.
Kaine has said he supports some form of nationalized health insurance.
