The support for Wythe County’s American Cancer Society Relay for Life is stronger than ever. After 14 years, the annual local event continues exceeding its goal with the amount of money raised.

While this past weekend’s total is not yet final, proceeds topped $192,254. The local goal for the 2008 Relay for Life was $170,000.

“We were a little concerned about donations earlier,” noted Tracie Gamble, chairman of the event. “With the economy the way it is and the cost of everything going up, we were skeptical of meeting our goal this year. But the support and participation were wonderful as always.”

Co-chairman Denise King added, “I was well-pleased with everything. We have a great committee with many years of experience. The amount of money raised is wonderful and everyone had a good time.”

According to Gamble, the committee decided not to have its accountant spend all night Friday counting late contributions and other proceeds. It will announce totals including top individual and team winners later this week.

“It’s just too much to do,” stated Gamble, who has participated in Relay for Life for the last 10 years. “It would have taken all night Friday to count the money.”

This year’s Relay for Life drew 39 teams and 690 registered walkers. Also 43 teenagers and 125 children participated in their own separate relays.

“Everything went smooth,” remarked Gamble. “It was a really good day. It was the best weather we’ve had in awhile.”

Among the highlights of the 24-hour event she mentioned was the Survivors’ Walk on Friday night. There were 129 survivors participating.

“It was so inspiring to see that many survivors come out,” commented Gamble.

Another huge hit was Deal or No Deal sponsored by Tyler’s Toy Soldiers. The take-off of the popular TV game show raised money by having contestants bid on a chance to win prizes.

“I think the lighting of the luminaries is such a touching ceremony,” said King, who has participated in Relay for Life since it began 14 years ago. “It’s always so impressive.”

Having completed its 14th year, the local Relay for Life shows no signs of losing its momentum. Last year’s Relay netted over $186,000.

“I think it’s going as strong as ever,” Gamble stated. “We have so many cases of cancer here in our area. It touches everyone’s life. That’s why we have so much support and participation.”

Added King, “It’s such a great cause. People want to help because it’s something they believe in.”
