“I will miss my friends and extended family at WSLS. I really will. I mean its just a great group of people and talented, and hard-working, and always under the gun. But I also have to say to the viewers, that i will miss the rapport that I have with them. I will miss the opportunity to be there, telling the viewers what’s going on. I will miss them allowing me into their living rooms every night, in their kitchens or wherever their TV is—and just feeling like I have that rapport with the community and that platform to create that rapport.“—From that interview
John has done many a Ten’s Most Wanted stories and has even been credited with helping to catch criminals. Recently, the U.S. Marshall’s honored him.
The Carlin’s Chronicles Fishing Picture Competition has become a yearly favorite for many. Manysubmit photos year after year. An avid fisherman himself, he enjoys seeing the many pictures and stories viewers send in.

I used to live in Roanoke but have since moved to California but I hope to come back one day. From time to time I check out the Roanoke news. I was sadden to find that John Carlin left WSLS. Even after all the years(I left Roanoke in 96) I recall the impression the station and it’s news casters made. I recall when Kally King left as well. Good luck John!

Dear John: (getting lots of Dear John letters : )
I want you to know how much I’ve appreciated hearing you day after day. You’ve added such an honest, genuine, and light-hearted presence to the newscast. You also have shown the caring side of yourself outside of the newsroom. What a healthy role-model you’ve been to your viewers! I’ll miss your presense. I wish you and your family the very best as you venture into your new job/career.
Blesings,
Vicki

Dear John
My name is Jim Ripley, and I have met you before. I am a cousin of Col. John Ripley, and you did a report on him several years ago. I will miss seeing you reporting the news on WSLS and FOX news. Congrats on your new job,and the best of luck to you in the future. You are a great young guy, and a wonderful reporter.

Dear John,
I wish you the best in your new career. You will be missed. It is good to see some of the clips of your time at WSLS!
I agree that the VT Tragedy is the story of the century and I know it firsthand as it has tragically impacted my own life (c.f. www.vtlessonstolearn.com).
May God Bless as you move on in your life. Your shoes will be hard to fill.

As long as my family and I can remember, we’ve always watched WSLS everyday, and it seems that you are always there, no matter what the story was. We all wish you the best of luck in your new job.
