Oh deer!

Although I hit a deer with my car… or it hit me… (deer ran off and appeared to be fine) I still think they are beautiful creatures… as Matt and I were on our little drive on Sunday we stopped to observe what appeared to be a “Mama” deer with two babies… they were too far away to take a photo but in a wide open field they were just along the wooded edge… grazing… or doing whatever deer families do…

Also, on my way home at night I see quite a few deer… I don’t like watching them run across the road in front of me but every night as I turn into our neighborhood I always look carefully in their favorite spots to see if they are waiting to welcome me home… I say this because a couple of years ago we had a deer family that liked to hang out in an empty field near our house… there must have been 6 of them.  Just after my grandma died I was on my way home… saying a prayer about the peace that I knew she had while tears streamed down my face for the woman I missed… and as I turned into our neighborhood all six deer were there to greet me… I hadn’t seen them in weeks… it was like they knew I needed a little smile…

That’s what happens for me when I see deer… I smile… our neighbor has fruit trees that they loved to snack on… just last night as I pulled into the driveway the headlights startled a large deer that had been feasting on the apples that aren’t quite ready for people to eat but must be mighty tasty for the animals.. as if I was a deputy with a spotlight… the deer that had been caught “red-hoofed” stopped eating and quickly ran across our driveway to the edge of our yard.. I stared after it and noticed it stopped to look over it’s shoulder at me… the deer probably wasn’t smiling at me but thinking.. “I wish you could have gotten home just a little later.. because I was enjoying those apples.. right up until you interrupted me…“
