I am seriously thinking about running the Star City Half Marathon again this year. At first I wasn’t going to do the event but after two weekends in a row with a ten mile run on Saturday mornings I am feeling pretty good about it… There is something really rewarding about finishing that ten miles and last year I was thrilled to finish the half marathon… A friend from work has been doing the long runs with me. It makes it fun to chat as we go… before you know it we are on the home stretch…
I decided to go for a run on Sunday too… but on this 4 mile run I just wanted to think about nothing… talk about nothing… I was taking in the leaves that are changing… listening to my shuffle… at first I didn’t want to run but once I got over the 2 mile mark… I was actually feeling pretty good…
As I approached my favorite part of the loop… a cul-de-sac with a beautiful view… every time I round the outer edge, I kiss my finger… point to the sky and say.. “I love you maw-maw.“ I still miss my mom’s mom… and feel like she is in heaven watching over me and helping me through the tough times… she was one of the greatest people I will ever know… her philosophy was “I love all people… but I don’t always like their ways.“ man if I could be more like that
just as I was about to get to that point a guy on a bicycle slows down and wants to talk to me… the conversation started out as small talk but then continued into a much more detailed discussion about different races held around the state… I most always enjoy talking to people but it isn’t all that fair when you are hoofing it and the person on the bike is casually pedaling… if I were out for a walk or stroll it would be different but I was already using some serious wind for this shorter more intense run and didn’t have a lot left over for small talk.. I finally politely explained to the gentleman that I was just out for a short run and just wanted a little time to myself… it is amazing what polite honesty will do for a situation… he wasn’t offended but immediately understood and said “enjoy the rest of your run” as he picked up speed and continued his Sunday ride…
