For as long as Robert Lawrence can remember, he’s watched his dad put his life on the line for the community – serving as a Roanoke City Police Officer.
“He’s always been helping people,“ Robert Lawrence said.
Saturday night Bryan Lawrence responded to a call like he usually would, and ended up in the hospital.
“He’s responsive.  He knows who everybody is.  He’s in and out.  He just wants to get well,“ Robert said.
Bryan Lawrence was left beaten and unconscious after a foot chase.
Police say Bryan was chasing William Steele, Jr. and Dontonio Foster, who were suspected of getting in a fight at a local gas station earlier that night.
The chase ended in the 3400 block of Hillcrest Avenue – not far from where it started.  Police say Bryan was taking Foster into custody when Steele attacked.
“I don’t know if they used a weapon or what.  From what they’re telling me he probably used his foot,“ Robert said.
For now, Bryan will remain in the hospital.
“I just think it’s going to be a long way for him to go before he’s back on his feet or doing this sort of thing again,“ Robert said.  “I want everybody to know he’s OK.  He’s being taken care of.  I’m pretty sure he’ll pull through.  Everybody is praying for him.“
“I don’t think he’s going to give up without a fight.  He never does.“
