When seconds count, ambulance services don’t have time to shop around for the lowest gas price.

Carilion Clinic operates a fleet of ambulances.

They are mainly used for patient transport between hospitals.  Some are diesel.  Others run on gasoline.

Crews pay for fuel with a special card when they fill up at stations around the area.

“There is a discount when you use the fleet cards because obviously you are buying in bulk through that method as well.“, says Susan Smith with Carilion Life-Guard.

Carilion is also considering installing a fuel tank for ambulances to fill up at their Roanoke base.  They don’t know how much that would actually save, since the ambulances drive all over the area and need to fill up wherever they are.
