Smoke and flames shoot through the roof of a local apartment building.
The fire broke out Sunday afternoon at the Summit. The apartment complex is along Route 220 in Roanoke. Roanoke City Firefighters were able to put out the flames.
Seventeen people cannot return to their homes. There are ten apartments in the building. Five are on the left side, which is the side that burned. There is smoke damage on the right side. Electric and gas service has been shut off to the building while firefighters investigate. The American Red Cross is helping the people who live there. A cause has not been determined, but firefighters believe it might have started on a back porch.
No people were hurt, but a dog and a cat were rescued from the building. The cat was taken to an emergency veterinarian. The dog is back with its owner.
