Appalachian Power officially files its application with the federal government for a new license to operate Smith Mountain Project, which the hydroelectric dams at Smith Mountain Lake and Leesville Lake are part of.

In a news release, APCO says a carrier trucked eight copies of the application to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) on Wednesday.  Each application is made up of 28 separate documents that describe the Smith Mountain Project’s components, discussions of operations, assessments and studies of the project’s environment, discussions of project costs and economics and proposed management plans for the project, according to APCO.

APCO says copies of the application and study reports will be available soon on the company’s relicensing website, http://www.smithmtn.com

The FERC will publish notices to alert the public about the permit renewal review process, and how people can submit their thoughts.
