BEDFORD — As a pilot, John Phillips of New Hill, N.C., is a frequent user of Smith Mountain Lake Airport.
Following approval Monday by the Bedford County Board of Supervisors, he and wife, Karen DeBord, have been cleared for takeoff on a bed and breakfast operation in Moneta to serve pilots like John.
Bedford Landings, a three-story lodge with five bedrooms and a 2,000-square-foot hangar on Buccaneer Road, is planned next to the airport’s runway.
“Pilots are always looking for a place to fly to,” he said in June following approval from the county’s planning commission.
Several neighbors lent their support to Phillips in June, saying it would improve the area next to the airport.
Monday’s public hearing on the matter held by supervisors drew only one speaker, who said he favored the project.
Phillips and DeBord said they plan to move to the area to run the business.
In other news from Monday’s meeting:
The board voted to pass a resolution that invites Campbell County to participate in a joint body called the Tri-County Lake Administrative Commission, which is composed of Bedford, Franklin and Pittsylvania counties.
Campbell County includes Leesville Lake, which plays a role in Appalachian Power Co.’s Smith Mountain Project — a hydroelectric dam using both lakes. The other localities are asking its participation to give Leesville Lake representation on the commission.
Campbell encompasses three percent of the shoreline within the project.
