Bedford Fire Dept. news release
Published: November 21, 2008

The Bedford Fire Department has been awarded grants to distribute and install free smoke detectors to homes in Bedford City and County.  The department was awarded 500 smoke detectors from the Home Safety Council and was also awarded the Virginia Department of Health’s “Get Alarmed Virginia” grant.  The combination of these two awards has allowed the department to develop a FREE smoke detector installation program.

Last year in Virginia there were over 8,500 fires and more than half of the homes affected by fire did not have a working smoke detector.  Also, more than 65% of fire related deaths could have been prevented if the home had a smoke detector.

Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including the basement, making sure that there is an alarm outside every separate sleeping area. New homes are required to have a smoke alarm in every sleeping room and all smoke alarms must be interconnected.  Mount smoke alarms high on walls or ceilings (remember, smoke rises). Ceiling mounted alarms should be installed at least four inches away from the nearest wall; wall-mounted alarms should be installed four to 12 inches away from the ceiling.

For details on how to receive your free smoke detector contact the Bedford Fire Station at 540-586-3433 or email .
