Botetourt County receives big bucks from the state to help it replace some 911 equipment.

The County says the state recently approved its 2008 Virginia Information Technology Agency (VITA) grant request.  VITA will give the County $145,537.  The County plans to use the money to replace radio and 911 recording equipment in the County’s Emergency Communications Center.

Botetourt County’s current radio gear is nearly ten years old, and the County says its recording equipment is even older.  County leaders say the older equipment still works.

A news release from the County states that:

VITA grants are made possible through funding collected by wireless E911 telephone taxes.  Individual localities can apply for up to $150,000 annually for specific enhancements to 911 centers.  The grant requires a 20% local match, which is included in the County’s recently adopted FY 2009 budget.

The County hopes to purchase the recording equipment this Summer, and the radio equipment later in the 2009 budget cycle.
