Emergency crews say it happened in Bedford County at the Smith Mountain Lake State Park in Huddleston. The incident was at the beach located on the peninsula near the end of State Park Road.
Police tell 10 On Your Side they will not release any information about the child, including if the child is alive, until additional family members are notified.
A couple of parents whose children were on a field trip to the beach with Roanoke County Parks and Rec told 10 On Your Side, their children saw all of this happen.
Parks and Rec Director Pete Haislip says the victim is not one of the children on that trip.
