The city of Salem and Roanoke College presented a memorial tribute to Virginia Tech at noon Wednesday.
The ceremony took place at the city’s farmers market, not far from the Roanoke College campus.
Speeches included words of encouragement from the Salem City Manager, Kevin Boggess, and Roanoke College President, Mike Maxey.
Musical tributes included a song from Deacon John Hodge of Shiloh Baptist Church, as well as the Salem High School marching band and a Roanoke College choir.
Bells belonging to the Salem Fire Department and Roanoke College tolled 32 times at the beginning and end of the ceremony.
There was also a balloon release from the crowd of about 300 people.
