The Secret Service charged Derek Shane Goodson with using a stolen social security number to fraud a Salem candy company out of $18,000, federal court documents show.
Scott Thomasson, vice president of sales at Layman Candy Company, confirmed Goodson owes the company around $18,000 after it outfitted Goodson’s Abingdon convenience store with food, drinks, and cigarettes last February.
“I think [Goodson] has defrauded a lot of people and he needs to be brought to justice,” Thomasson said Thursday.
Thomasson said Goodson opened an account with company under the guise he wanted to profit from the Bristol Motor Speedway’s spring NASCAR race. The race brings thousands of fans to the Bristol-Abingdon area.
However Thomasson said after a few bounced checks, Goodson skipped town.
“It’s a tremendous loss and we’ll have to [absorb] all of it,” he said.
10 On Your Side has learned police in Knoxville, Tennessee picked up Goodson on unrelated charges of theft, being a fugitive, and violating probation.
A spokesman for the Secret Service’s Roanoke regional office confirmed the criminal complaint but declined comment for the record until Goodson is officially served his arrest warrant.
