TALLADEGA, Ala.—Denny Hamlin, a former Chesterfield resident, was taken to a Birmingham hospital today after slamming into the wall at Talladega Superspeedway.
Hamlin was leading the AMP Energy 500 when the right front tire of the No. 11 Toyota blew in Turn 2 on Lap 98. Hamlin was taken from the racetrack on a stretcher complaining of ankle pain.
“It was quite a shot—kind of hurt his ankle a little bit, but that should be OK,“ said J.D. Gibbs, president of Joe Gibbs Racing. “He’s got a little headache, so they’re just going to watch him. He’s alert and doing well.“
Hamlin was one of several drivers to experience tire problems—including Brian Vickers, whose blown tire on Lap 69 triggered a nine-car crash.
“The tire went down and it was quite a shot,“ Gibbs said. “The good news is that [Hamlin] feels pretty good, but we’re just going to take precautions and make sure he’s OK. I talked to his family and just let them know what was going on.“
