The National Weather Service confirmed an EF1 tornado touched down Thursday night in Pittsylvania County.

As of late Friday evening, the NWS was still on site along Highway 40 near Gretna determining the tornado’s track and length.

“It just sounded like people were hitting my house with rocks,“ said Virginia Mahan.

Mahan said she spent the worst part of the storm huddled in her closet, on the phone with her daughter.

“I really didn’t feel as afraid as I thought I was going to feel during a tornado,“ Mahan said.

The NWS reported numerous trees down in the area.

  Mahan’s home was slightly damaged.

The roof on the home of her next door neighbor was also damaged.
