ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Monday proved to be a day of beauty for dozens of women staying at the Roanoke Rescue Mission.

For the sixth year, First Presbyterian Church in Roanoke gave more than 70 women manicures and hair cuts.

Around 25 volunteers from local salons and Miller-Motte Technical College helped with the makeovers.

That includes student Cheryl Ratliffe, who's studying to get her cosmetology license. She stayed at the Roanoke Rescue Mission after becoming addicted to drugs.

Ratliffe's been clean for 3 1/2 years. Now she's excited to help others who are staying at the shelter.

"It was my idea to come back because I wanted to bring back some goodness to the ladies," Ratliffe said. "When I was here in the program they used to do it for us. It made me feel good and made me want to do something more."

The women were also treated to door prizes and a free lunch.
