State police have confirmed a triple-fatal accident on Interstate 77 in Wythe County.
Virginia State Police Sgt. Michael Conroy said three members of a family of five were killed when their SUV hit an 18-wheeler head on.
Conroy said the family was headed southbound near mile marker 45 when the driver lost control sending the SUV across the median and into the path of the tractor-trailer.
Conroy declined to reveal the identities of the victims. He also declined to say where the family was from.
Conroy said one lane in both directions of the interstate is shut down and may be for the next several hours.
Conroy said a state police accident reconstruction team was also on scene investigating.
