Transportation Safety Awards Announced

The Virginia Board of Transportation announces the winner of this year’s Governor’s Transportation Safety Awards.

Of the 15 awards, five have local ties.

The Lifetime Safety Achievement award went to Captain Robert Stickler, who recently retired from the Franklin Co. Sheriff’s Office after 25 years of service.
Capt. Stickler helped to develop special programs for young drivers, improving seat belt and safety seat use, among other things.

The Employer Safety award went to the Mount Rogers Industrial and Development Center in Wytheville, which officers daily transportation services for citizens with disabilities.

The General Traffic Safety award went to the Bedford Police Dept., for raising awareness about seat belts and air bags.

The Law Enforcement award went to Sgt. Kyle Moore, Special Agent David Willis, and Trooper Allen Mann from State Police’s Salem division. They recently helped develop and secure funding for a DUI simulator to accompany their DUI-preventative presentations. The golf-cart-turned-minature-Dodge-Charger works by allowing a driver to drive a course without any impairment.

Finally, The Occupant Protection award went to the Northside High School Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) club for participating in a variety of activities in 2007 including the Buckle Up Challenge to raise awareness about wearing seat belts.
