The state’s top agency addressing the
concerns of mentally disabled Virginians is considering a name
change.
Officials at the Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation
and Substance Abuse Services are seeking public comment on four
potential new names. They include the Department of Behavioral and
Developmental Services, the Department of Behavioral Health and
Supportive Services, the Department of Behavioral and Supportive
Services and the Department of Supportive and Recovery Services.
Officials say they’re seeking a shorter name and are responding
to modern demands for more sensitive terms.
Lawmakers recently advanced legislation striking “mentally
retarded” from the text of state laws. Suggestions are due by July
31.
