State Police will launch an investigation into a campaign ad, that attacked a candidate for Roanoke city council in the May election.

Botetourt County Commonwealth’s Attorney, Joel Branscom, who is the special prosecutor in the case, says Virginia Attorney General Bob McDonnell authorized State Police to conduct the investigation.

The ad attacked then City Council candidate, now current City Councilman, Court Rosen, and appeared in the Roanoke Times, and Roanoke Star Sentinal with a false name as the sponsor.

Former City Council member Brian Wishneff claims a Roanoke Times sales representative suggested he provide the fake name.  The paper denies Wishneff’s claim.
