It won’t be long before Virginia Tech Head Coach Frank Beamer takes a tunnel to the field, and this season he may be in for the ride of his life.

Almost half his team is young and inexperienced.

“The good part is that there’s good talent here,“ Beamer said.

That talent will get to try a lot of new things this season starting Saturday in Charlotte.

“I think they’re in for a heck of a day in their life,“ he said.

Lester Karlin, Virginia Tech’s Equipment Manager, is one person who’s trying to make sure everything runs smoothly.

“Right now we’re working on getting everything packed,“ Karlin said.

Not only are there a lot of new players playing in a completely new atmosphere, all the Hokies will be donning new gear.  Of course, new uniforms means lots of fitting and alterations, which is keeping Karlin busy.

On top of getting all the equipment ready, he’s trying to keep all the guys – young and old – in line.

“I’ll find out Thursday when they take their stuff over to the truck if I have to yell at them or not,“ he said.

How much yelling Coach Beamer will do is still yet to be seen.

“We’ll see for sure, Saturday at 12,“ Beamer said.
