A local Congressional race receives national attention.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) named the race between incumbent Republican Congressman Virgil Goode and Democratic challenger Tom Perriello as one of their “Red to Blue” program races, meaning the Democrats think the race will be one of the most competitive in the country.
In a news release, candidate Perriello said, “The momentum we are feeling around this district is incredible, and this vote of confidence from the national party will help us reach even more voters over the final 94 days.“
The “Red to Blue” program offers financial, communications, and strategic support to its races, according to a news release.
Chairman of the DCCC Chris Van Hollen says the DCCC sees Virginia, “as presenting a terrific opportunity for Democrats this year, not just in the Obama-McCain race and in the Mark Warner Senate race, but in House races as well.”
Congressman Goode has served as the 5th district’s representative on Capitol Hill since being elected in 1996 as a Democrat. He later switched to an independent and often voted with the GOP, before joining the Republican Party officially in 2002.
