The audience was seniors from Central Virginia at the Senior Center.
The incumbent and challenger took questions on healthcare, energy crisis and the Iraq War, but both candidates agree the number one problem facing the 5th district is rising gas prices and it’s affect on the economy.
“The biggest issue on the mind is the high fuel prices and I’ve encountered most persons that are in favor of a pro-drill policy in Anwar,” said Virgil Goode, (R) Virginia 5th District.
“Jobs and economic relief to working families and small business and I think everyone in Washington has taken their eye off the ball,” Tom Perriello said, (D) Virginia 5th District Candidate.
Perriello means Republicans and his own party, the Democrats. Throughout the forum Perriello spoke of bipartisanship and a new generation of politics, one he says Goode doesn’t understand.
“The national party for the first time ever has made this a priority swing race. The fact is he’s gotten out of touch with the district. It’s not that he’s a bad guy it’s just that he’s gotten a little out of touch with the amount of money and time he spends up in Washington,” Perriello said.
“I’m in touch with the district. I focus my time on being in the 5th district and Washington, I’ve done that over the years and I think that’s crucial to go around a district find out what’s on people’s mind,” Goode said.
After an hour of answering questions, the group has a lot on their mind and Wednesday’s forum ends with a hand shake and a cheer.
