WARREN: “Congressman, thanks for taking some time to talk with us a little bit. I want to start by asking some questions here starting off with what do you think is the biggest threat facing America?”
GOODLATTE: “I think the biggest threat facing America right now is our lack of energy independence. It’s a national security issue; it’s affecting our economy in a big way.”
WARREN: “What do you think your leadership style is? Can you describe it?”
GOODLATTE: “Well, I think my style is one of listening to my constituents and then taking those views to Washington and then working with everybody there to accomplish the goals I think my constituents want to see from the Federal government.”
WARREN: “Roughly 80% of the country says we’re on the wrong track. Would you agree with them?”
GOODLATTE: “Well I think that as long as we have a lack of a strong energy policy, as long as we are not making the tough decisions in Washington to balance the budget, that we are on the wrong track.”
WARREN: “I want to go through some word associations. If I give you one word, I hope you can give me one word back. We’ll start with “Southwest Virginia.“ What comes to mind first?”
GOODLATTE: “Beautiful mountains and valleys and wonderful people.”
WARREN: “Iraq?“
GOODLATTE: “A major challenge that we are making progress on, but we need to make sure that we get the job done.”
WARREN: “Iran?“
GOODLATTE: “A nuclear threat that cannot be ignored.”
WARREN: “One word for “George Bush?“
GOODLATTE: “Resolved.”
WARREN: “One word for “John McCain?“
GOODLATTE: “Courageous.”
WARREN: “Barack Obama?”
GOODLATTE: “Untested.”
WARREN: “And finally, you’re opponent Sam Rasoul?”
GOODLATTE: “Very young.”
WARREN: “And what is, do you think, is his best quality or trait?”
GOODLATTE: “Well, I think that he works hard at what he’s doing.”
WARREN: “And finally, Tech or UVa?”
GOODLATTE: “Some of my friends are with Tech, some of my friends are with UVa, I stand with my friends.
WARREN: “Very good, thanks you sir very much, I appreciate the time.”
GOODLATTE: “Thanks Jay.”
