Roanoke County School Board approved their 2008-2009 budget for Roanoke County Public Schools at their March 20th meeting.  The $143,223,216 budget includes funding for several initiatives that include:
•    4% pay increase for all teachers plus a 1% market adjustment
•    4% pay increase for administrative and classified employees
•    Market adjustments for certain classified pay scales
•    Approximately $3.2 million in debt service to renovate four elementary
schools (Cave Spring, Green Valley, Masons Cove and Mount Pleasant) on $40
million project cost
•    Increases in health and dental insurance benefits
•    Increases in funding for fuel and utility costs

“We are pleased to provide raises for our teachers and staff despite a lack of raises from the General Assembly,” said Roanoke County Superintendent Dr. Lorraine Lange.

“This has been a long, involved process,” said School Board Chairman Jerry Canada.  “We did the best we could to consider every funding request.  We are pleased we could meet as many funding needs as we did with this budget.” Canada said.

According to Roanoke County Public School Board, the newly passed 2008-2009 budget is six-percent, or about $8.1 million higher than the 2007-2008 budget.  The board said that part of the budget increase was due to additional state funding as a result of state re-benchmarking.

The Roanoke County School Board is required by the Code of Virginia to adopt an annual school budget by April 1 of each year.  Adjustments to the state budget are still possible, which could alter the amount of state funding provided to the school system.  If this happens, a revised budget would be submitted to the school board for adoption.
